Few things are more comforting to the soul than a good Rioja, and Pedro Pecina has swooped in with his Crianza to take care of us! Pecina's winery is located in the hamlet of Sonsierra in the Rioja Alta subzone, in a cluster of towns and villages that contain many of the most sought after Rioja producers around. High elevations and limestone soils combine to make wines of uncommon structure and finesse. Pecina's Crianza is aged for two years in barrel, followed by at least 18 months in bottle before its release. Almost entirely Tempranillo with a dash each Graciano and Garnacha blended in, this is what this style of wine is all about here: a rich and deep nose of herbs and dark fruit with a touch of fine tobacco and leather proclaims that this is a well-made Rioja. A medium-to-full bodied palate with finely polished fruit that has retained quite a bit of freshness is a world apart from more "rustic" examples of Rioja on the market. Firm but well defined tannin perfectly complements the spiciness and slightly bitter amaro-like quality on the finish.
