Northern Italy is peppered with so many great traditions of white winemaking, they seem to have a way of canceling one another out. But one need not choose between Gavi or Soave permanently: there are enough days for them all! Lugana is among these regions, but is often somewhat misunderstood. Many mis-attribute these wines from the border of Lombardy and the Veneto at the base of Lake Garda to the neutral and frequently uninspiring Trebbiano variety. However, Lugana is made from the similar Turbiana variety, a distance cousin of the former. San Giovanni offers one of the best versions of the style available to us: a viscosity like olive oil, a fruit character of apricot and golden apples, and a zested lemon acidity that leaves the lips smacking.
