One of the more common questions we are asked here at Malden Center is "What's a good full-bodied Italian red?" In Scala Rosso Superiore, we have an excellent answer! Hailing from Calabria, the region that forms the "toe" of Italy's boot, the Scala family's estate is located in the heart of Ciro appellation. This is the most celebrated wine-making area of Calabria, where the hearty Gaglioppo reigns supreme. Like most examples of the grape, Scala's Gaglioppo has a warm and inviting nose of plum, smokey rhubarb, and violets. A fresh combination of black and red fruit follows on the palate. The finish is quite bold, with quinine notes and plenty of firm but fruity tannin.
